3rd round of STAR data!

Boom!  We are still meeting our goal - right on the money!  Seventy-five percent of CCES students are reading on grade level or making 0.6 years growth since August!

Here is also a look at our scores compared to last year:

Test 3 - Current Year Test 3  -  last year
kindergarten 88% 63%
1st 63% 60%
2nd 88% 80%
3rd 75% 71%
4th 64% 67%
5th 73% 72%
75% 69%
Things are moving in the right direction.  Keep doing what you know works - Lexia and Reading Plus weekly, encourage AR and the vocabulary tests that goes with it, and solid reading instruction every week.  We know that as our students become better readers - they will improve in every subject area.

Way to go CCES teachers - your hard work is paying off!

Friday Focus - December 1st, 2017

It is such a busy time of year (I say that all the time - when isn't busy?) but it is one of my favorites.  The elementary school is a great place to work during this time of the year because  you get to see the joy that children get out of Christmas.  I know many of you have special activities planned to make this time memorable for your students and I know the large amounts of money that you spend.  Thank you  - it makes such an impact on these kids.

Most of you have noticed that we have changed our walkthrough tool.  It is now a paper that we just mark different things we see going on in your classroom and leave comments.  You get a copy of the form to keep and we keep one.  I am attaching a copy here.  This is a great tool for you to look at periodically as you plan your instruction.

Map testing - push for GROWTH!  We want to see every student grow in both reading and math!

Wear RED tomorrow!

Remember to sign up for the staff Christmas dinner in Ms. Sonya's office.

Next Week at a Glance...
Monday - MAP testing continues.  3rd grade has computer lab reserved until 9.
Tuesday - Parent meeting to get input on CSIP at 3 in Lisa's office.
Wednesday - Lighthouse Team meets at 3
Thursday - Reflex training in 2nd floor computer lab

*We will do Leader of the Month recognition and breakfast on Monday, December 11th.

Friday Focus - Thanksgiving Edition

As we get ready for Thanksgiving, I want you to know that I truly am thankful for all of you and what you give to our students every day.  Each day I see people sacrifice to make sure these kids here have everything they need and their day is a good day.  I am thankful and blessed to work here.  There is no other place on earth I had rather be.

*Peer observations should be finished by November 30th.
*Encourage your students to bring in Box Tops.  This is free to us and an easy way to bring in additional funds to the school.
*Science TCT should be finished by November 30th.
*Map testing begins next week and will continue through December 15th.  Please check the Living Calendar for updates - there are changes to the first floor computer lab schedule on some days and it will effect RTI.  Please plan accordingly.

Next Week at a Glance....
Tuesday - LIM Coaching Day with Tara Beasley (I will be emailing the Lighthouse Team the schedule)
3:00 - Sunshine Committee meets
Wednesday - Safety meeting afterschool in the gym
Friday - Wear red to "Remember Everyone Deployed"

Happy Thanksgiving!

Friday Focus - November 17, 2017

Only a few more days until Thanksgiving Break!  A short week next week and then three weeks until Christmas. Time is going by quickly!

Thanks to the Sunshine Committee
for the board out in the front hall.  It is definitely being used!  Also, for organizing the Annie Ruby's deliveries.  Nothing like good food to end the week.

No 21st Century next week - make sure students know and have plans for what they need to do.

No Panther Time next week.

Remind students that beginning after Christmas you will only be allowed one yellow day and still attend Panther Time that week.  Two yellows will result in loss of Panther Time.  Also, when students don't have Panther Time - this is a great time for them to catch up on work they haven't completed during the week.  It is not meant to be free time.

Send Remind text for students to wear House shirts on Monday.

Next Week at a Glance...
Monday - House/Pod Breakfast on Monday morning.  I need a few people who are willing to be here at 6:55 to be in the three locations (library, cafeteria and gym).  Please let me know if are willing to do that.  There will not be morning assembly and the morning will run just like it did on Halloween day.  Here is the Google slide with the plan for the morning.  Please let me know if you have questions.
Tuesday -  Thanksgiving Potluck

1:45 meeting to plan spring Panther Time for those teachers   in Lisa's office.

Friday Focus - November 10, 2017

The Friday Focus is back!  Teachers mentioned that this was a great way to stay focused on upcoming activities and keep everyone up-to-date on what is going on.  So - each week the Friday Focus will be updated here on the blog.  I hope you find it helpful.

The Wilderness Trip was a great experience for our kids this week.  I appreciate those that went and help make it such a good time.  I also want to thank all those who stayed behind and held the fort down while we were gone.

Four and a half weeks before Christmas break.  I know this is a crazy time of year and you have so much on your plates.  Remember the most important thing you do is to shut your door and teach!  That is what you are here to do.  And I will work to keep the disruptions at a minimum!

Check the Living Calendar daily and add to it as events come out.  I have added several dates for the year (CPA's, STAR, MAP).

Remember - peer observations are due by November 30th as well as the first science through-course task.

Also - as a service project we are collecting classroom supplies for the hurricane victims.

Next week at a glance...
Monday - Leader of the Month breakfast & recognition
                3:00 Simple Solutions webinar
                4:00 SBDM

STAR Data - August 2017

Here are the percentages for our 1st STAR assessment of the year:

Remember our goal is for 75% of our students to be reading at or above grade level or make 1.2 years growth by May 2017.  As you can see, we are starting the year much lower than we ended last year. Of course, a big part of that is the summer lapse and just getting back into the swing of school.

It is time to get started.  We know that if students are reading on grade level, their achievement in every area will increase.  We have seen firsthand the difference it can make here at CCES.

So, how do we help students increase their reading level?

1.  Lexia - students need to get a minimum of 10 units each week.  Monitor students as they are working and be attentive to when they are struggling.  Lexia gives them the phonics base they need to be successful.
2.  When you have AR time in your classroom, make sure it is used effectively.  Again, monitor students and their progress.  They should be reading and taking test.  Some students will go for days with the same book - they just pull it out and make it look like they are reading.  Don't let them fool you!  Have conversations with them about what they are reading and their AR progress.
3.  Incorporate reading instruction into every thing you do.  You don't have to be THE reading teacher to be A reading teacher.  Take every opportunity to talk about what go readers do and lead by example.
4.  Encourage students to try each time they take the STAR assessment so our results are as accurate as possible!

September 1, 2017

Just a few reminders before the long weekend...

  • Please remember to check the Living Calendar daily.  There are links to several items on there and it is continuously being updated.  It is a wealth of information.  Contribute to it as well!
  • No Panther Time next week.  This will be a longer period of time that students are working toward so please explain this to them.
  • I AM SORRY...but we do need to meet on Wednesday during your planning to do RTI meetings since we are not having PLC's this week.  Grant teachers and special ed teachers...you will need to meet with the grade levels you work with.
  • Do not allow students to come to the office for pickup for 1st bell.  The office will call if we need them to be sent down.  We are working to make sure our afternoon dismissal is smoother and as safe as possible.
  • Please remember to pick up a radio from the office when you go outside each day.
  • Shoutout to Ms. Sonya - auditors have been here in the district this week and CCES received a great report!  Thanks for all you do Ms. Sonya!
Have a great weekend!

August 25, 2017

It has been another great week at CCES.

We are excited about Panther Time beginning next week.  Homeroom teachers - remember that you will follow an alternate schedule on your Panther Time day.  Students need to have had recess before Panther Time.

If you haven't signed the CEP form, please do so now.

Also, all staff needs to complete the Show on the Road school compliance training.  Print out the certificate, sign and turn in to Lisa's mailbox.

SAFETY ISSUES
*Please take radios to the playground.
*All teachers should have a key to the gate locks.  You will need this if you are out on the playground and need to go to the Mary Ann Keen center if our building is in lockdown.
*When we go into lockdown, teachers need to check in the hallway and pull in students who are out there.  Teachers close to a bathroom - please get students out of the restroom and bring them in your room.
*Email Lisa, Nathan, Valerie, Andrea, Geanetta and Sonya a list of who you have, who you are missing and who you have that is extra.

Have a great weekend!

August 18, 2017

Good Friday afternoon!

Just a few reminders as we close out the first full week of school....

-try to finish assessments (SNAP, Core, STAR, etc) during the next couple of weeks. September 1st is the deadline.
-Mr. Nathan sent an email earlier today with a schedule for Tuesday to bring your class to the cafeteria.  Ms. Geanetta and Ms. Loretta want to go over lunchroom procedures.
-update your grade level morning announcement slides.
-Each homeroom should select two dependable students from each homeroom to come get notes from the front office.  They need to come twice a day - once at lunch and once around 2:15.
-We have set a date of October 13th for our Fall Festival.  We will do baskets to auction as well as homeroom memorabilia.  We will also do the CCES Prince and Princess contest.  Start thinking of ideas for this event...it is our biggest fundraiser of the year.
-Show on the Road compliance trainings need to be completed by September 1st.

And this is Karen modeling the way we should all return to school on Tuesday!

Friday Update

Here is a little something...in case you've had a rough first week. LOL

In all seriousness, it has been a wonderful first couple of days of school.  I really couldn't have asked for a smoother couple of days.  Thank you for working as a TEAM to make it go so well.

I am going to update this blog on Friday and that will serve as the Friday Focus. Remember to check the blog and Living Calendar EVERY DAY.

     Reminders:

*Please be conscientious of lunch drop-offs and pick-ups times.  Even being a minute or two off, throws off the entire schedule.
*It is expected that homeroom teachers will walk classes to and from special class.
*Morning assembly will begin on Monday.  The google doc where you enter recognitions is attached to the Living Calendar.
*Keep reminding students about returning packets and the $15 supply fee.
*Keep practicing procedures.  Work on your classroom culture until it is what you want!
*No Panther time nor PLC time next week.  We will begin on August 22nd! Go over with students that guidelines for Panther time. Mr. Nathan is bringing posters to every grade level.
