STAR Data - August 2017

Here are the percentages for our 1st STAR assessment of the year:

Remember our goal is for 75% of our students to be reading at or above grade level or make 1.2 years growth by May 2017.  As you can see, we are starting the year much lower than we ended last year. Of course, a big part of that is the summer lapse and just getting back into the swing of school.

It is time to get started.  We know that if students are reading on grade level, their achievement in every area will increase.  We have seen firsthand the difference it can make here at CCES.

So, how do we help students increase their reading level?

1.  Lexia - students need to get a minimum of 10 units each week.  Monitor students as they are working and be attentive to when they are struggling.  Lexia gives them the phonics base they need to be successful.
2.  When you have AR time in your classroom, make sure it is used effectively.  Again, monitor students and their progress.  They should be reading and taking test.  Some students will go for days with the same book - they just pull it out and make it look like they are reading.  Don't let them fool you!  Have conversations with them about what they are reading and their AR progress.
3.  Incorporate reading instruction into every thing you do.  You don't have to be THE reading teacher to be A reading teacher.  Take every opportunity to talk about what go readers do and lead by example.
4.  Encourage students to try each time they take the STAR assessment so our results are as accurate as possible!
